maryfi - turn your wifi equipped laptop into a hotspot

Maryfi or mary-fi is a freeware app that turns your wifi equipped laptop into a wifi hotspot. Win 7 only AFAIK.

I've tested it using a usb 3g modem (sun bro). Works great and not that difficult to configure. The program has a small PDF file with step by step instructions. It also supposedly works if your laptop's internet is coming in via LAN cable.

But an interesting claim is that even if your laptop's source of internet is wifi, you can in turn re-broadcast the internet, turning your laptop into a repeater. So if laptop A is in range of the wifi router but another laptop B is out of range, but in range of laptop A, with mary-fi laptop A can repeat the wifi signal to laptop B. Pretty cool trick. Unfortunately I haven't tried it yet so I cant confirm because I need to borrow another laptop to do that.

As of now, the website of mary fi is down. This is what I can see

local shortage of wifi routers

Last november I was in the market for a new wifi router so I went around my local SM mall in San Fernando Pampanga and wrote down the available model numbers and prices so I could make a better decision as to what to buy.

2 days ago, I was in one shop and I noticed that only one model of router was available. Last november there were at least 4 brands available. Intrigued, I went to a total of 5 PC stores in my local SM mall. All of them have severe shortages of wifi routers compared to what I saw before. I talked to the employees in 3 stores and they said that they were all sold out. New stocks should arrive in a week or so.

Well its expected since its after the christmas season and a lot of people must have bought them as gifts. I did not really check on other items but the stores seemed a little roomier than before. So early january is not a good time to buy a wifi router because there is a shortage. Wait for new stocks and new models to arrive.

Its now illegal to have unprotected wifi

Its now illegal to have unprotected wifi and someone uses it to pirate stuff.

Internet users can be fined up to euro100 ($126) if a third party takes advantage of their unprotected WLAN connection to illegally download music or other files, the Karlsruhe-based court said in its verdict.

Wi-Fi Direct - no router needed

An interesting technology. Of course it has been available fro some time. Google AD-HOC wifi connections.

I hope this also includes mesh networking. Mesh networking is like If laptop A is connected to the internet by a wifi hotspot and laptop B is connected to laptop A via wifi but is too far from the hotspot, laptop B can go online by using laptop A as a repeater

suffering from wifi allergy, man sues neighbor for using wifi router

this would be tragic except that (see the comments in the link)

1. faraday cage. duhhh! You can shield your house. You can even use metallic paint.

2. mythbusters type studies have found that people complain whenever they see a celllphone repeater or a wifi router  - whether or not the power is turned on, as long as they see the LED indicator lights are on. Placebo effect man!!

3. unless you have a diesel, a car engine also makes a lot of EM radiation, although the the car body acts as a faraday cage
