Xerox machines are a security risk

This is an eye opening article. In the philippines we are used to old fashioned xerox machines that work mechanically. But if your xerox machine is a digital model, it has a hard drive that stores all documents that were xeroxed.

If for example a digital copier is refurbished and sold, the hard drive may still contain images of the documents that you xeroxed.

Dawn of war 2: chaos rising review

I pre bought DOW2:CR on steam. It came with a free game, saints row 2 but the offer is now over so its back to $29.99.

It's a standalone game so you do not need dow2. You can buy the gold edition on steam for $39.99 which includes both games.

First, a disclaimer. As a warhammer 40k fan, I might be a little biased. And I wont post any spoilers about the game's plot so dont worry.

As for hardware requirements, I have a intel c2d e8200, 4 gigs ram and a radeon 4850 video card and I kept going below 20 fps at max settings @ 1280x1024. I suspect my CPU is the bottleneck so I had to go down to medium settings. At max settings, it does look a little prettier than I remember for the original game. I dont know if this will be affected by any future patches from the developers.

New to this game is the corruption system. Based on actions that you did or did not do or on your choice of wargear, all members of your party except Davian Thule can have corruption points added or removed. Your corruption level afects the ending and some abilities/wargear have corruption level requirements so choose carefully.

The level cap is increased to 30 . If you dont have an old DOW2 game, you'll get level 20 characters wit pre-set stats and wargear.

New to the interface are optional speeches by the characters. These are all optional and do not affect your game in anyway except to convey some additional background information or to give some tips on your mission. As a special note, NPC's who have these optional speeches have their own static picture and our hot governess, governor Derosa looks ... stupid in her static portrait. Her animation and voice when talking to the player is fortunately unchanged from the original game.

Another new thing in the interface is the showing of the damage modifiers for the weapon. A weapon can have a zero to  125% damage modifier. For example an anti personel weapon like a bolter or a chainsword may have give 100% damage for light infantry but 0%-10% damage to vehicles. The dmage value for each weapon appears to be per shot so fast firing weapons like the assault cannon have misleadingly low damage displayed.

There is a new playable character, the librarian Jonas. Like the force commander he is a solitary figure. I guess he takes the place of a spellcaster in traditional RPG's. I never was big on spellcasters so I did not use him much. He does have several useful abilites or "magic spells" with a fast cooldown time. I think you use him as more of a supporting character as he doesnt dish out a lot of damage nor can he take a lot of damage. His darker skin color makes him appear to be African in race, just like  inquisitor Toth in the original dawn of war. IMHO, I would have liked Jonas to have more slots for spells.

Of course there are more weapons and armors. Some are evil and will corrupt your players. Some have specific corruption requirements, i.e. your corruption level must be less or more than x to use. There are of course new types of wargear. One type is staffs and force swords for Jonas. He can alos use one handed pistols. Jonas also has librarian armor and spells or psyker powers.

Special mention for these new wargear types. There are scrolls which can increase or decrease corruption levels either for one squad or for all squads. There are scrolls which permanently increase experience or stats for one squad. There are "raw materials" which can become armor, weapons or purity seals, depending on which squad its used on.

You have ~ 15 missions including the optional ones. IMHO this is kinda short so unless you go multiplayer, you will finish this game quickly. Missions are definitely less repetitive than the original game. The final boss in the final mission can be very difficult for higher difficulty levels.

Sometimes turrets can be upgraded to missle turrets. Chaos also has access to laser turrets but I dont know if you also have access to that in the single player game. I tend to keep the turrets un-upgraded because with missle turrets, the missle will explode if it hits terrain while bolts and lasers will travel through terrain to hit trargets. I dont know if this is a bug or only cosmetic.

As the story progresses, you will learn more about your chapter. You learn that the blood ravens DO have a chapter master. I am still upset at the retcon of the chapter master. Specially if you read the novels, the blood angels were unique in that there was no chapter master. The leadership of the chapter used to be a cabal or junta of several "high level" characters chosen from among the captains and the senior librarians. And as befitting the blood raven's obsession with finding knowledge and keeping secrets, the actual names of the members of the junta are kept secret even from the blood ravens themselves. Only the junta knows the names of its members. There is supposed to be a reason why its kept secret. Something about denying that information to enemies keeps them from using it to their advantage.

For some reason I never could find or join any games online. This may be due to my ISP or maybe due to my being in the Philippines. You can play in "skirmish" mode against a computer bot. In skirmish mode unless you have the original game, you can only play as Chaos. I'm not fond of multiplayer anyway.

I give this a 4 out of 5 stars.

wi-tribe plan 1998

For 1998 pesos you get "up to 2mbps". The cap is 12 gigs. No mention of the post cap speeds on the official website but some unconfirmed reports say it is 1 mbps

24 months lock in period but you can lower that to 12 and 6 months by paying 4498 or 6998 pesos.

It still has a cap so it still sucks

And no mention of the 1am to 7am off peak hours where the  cap meter runs 75% slower. It probably isnt out yet

wi-tribe 200pesos per gig

Wi tribe has officially launched their bandwidth on demand.

For either plan 998 or 1998, if you already exceeded the cap and you speed is already throttled, you can pay 200 pesos per gig to get your speed back up to pre-cap speeds

Thats quite expensive. I propose an alternative

Instead of paying 200 pesos for 1 gig, just get your smart buddy prepaid sim card and activate unlisurf and transfer the sim card to your smart bro prepaid usb 3.5g modem to get 5 days of unlimited surfing up to 2mbps. It also costs 200 pesos.  See links for more details.

@ 1 mbps you can download 55 gigs in 5 days or 120 hrs

TrustFire XP-E F23

Ok, I bought a new LED flashlight from Dealextreme (LINK). $13.61, free shipping. It took 1 month to arrive from Hongkong to the Philippines.

Dont I have enough flashlights? Well, I have one unfilled niche. This flashlight is AAA and small enough to be a keychain, for emergencies so I always have a flashlight on me.

Now how did i choose this from the wide selection at Dealextreme? Its quite easy with my simple criteria
  • Lowest possible price
  • Multi mode
  • Relatively Bright
  • AAA. Yes I know this is more expensive and less common compared to AA but I need small size. I avoided button cells because I would sacrifice brightness and I would have resupply problems.
  • Not generic, at least have a class A chinese brand. That way I get slightly more quality and hopefully I get a tougher light.
The modes are as follows :
Hi 150LM 1200mA > Low 80LM 900mA > SOS 120LM

LM means lumens, mA is milli amps. And one nice thing about the light is that it has a mode memory. What that means is that the light remembers what the last mode was. So the logic of the circuitry is simple. If the circuit finds out that you turned the light on-off-on with 1 or 2 seconds in between the two ons, it will move to the next mode. So if you turn the flashlight on after a long time, the mode it is in will be the last mode used. Nice trick. If this trick was not present as a second choice I would choose the Low mode to be the default mode.

Now since I insisted on AAA and multi mode, I had to make a few sacrifices. First, no knurling and the shiny finish. No knurling means that I might have problems holding this if my hands were slippery and the shiny finish is not stealthy but it looks good. Its shiny! Second, its a bit longer and noticably heavier. It is made of stainless steel though, thts why its heavy. It sits a bit heavy in my pants pocket but I should get used to it over time. If there was an aluminum multi mode AAA flashlight in the same price range available, I would havegotten that but no other choice was available.

Build quality and machining is good except for a little sloppyness at the contact for the Positive end of the battery. A wipe with a clean rag helps. You can barely see the junction between the body and the tailcap BTW. Even with your fingers you can barely feel the seam. The Seam between the body and the head is another matter. Of course you can see the gold plated ring but with your fingers you can definitely feel the seam.

No sharp edges or roughness. The screws are not as well made as say my maglites and its a little difficult to screw back on specially when fighting the spring's pressure but its ok and it should improve with a little petroleum jelly lubricant.

The tailcap protrudes out and you cannot sit the light on its base. It also does not have a candle mode, i.e. a naked bulb with no reflector.

An unusual feature is the use of glow in the dark green rubber for all the 4 O rings and the tailcap. I havent tested how the glow lasts. These are all 10 second exposures with my Canon 590IS digicam.

Here's a little enhanced shot of the O ring at the glass face. This also glows in the dark after you turn the light on for a few seconds.

The light is very bright at high mode. Comparable in intensity to my other lights like my maglite LEDs. Low mode light output is quite good too. The reflector is deep and shiny. Being of a smaller diameter, we dont expect much from the reflector but it does its job. At 1 meter the central spot is a bitlarger than 1 foot in diameter. Unlike my maglites, much more light spills out. Even the spill is bright enough to work by. All are acceptable compromises for a smaller diameter flashlight.

The light on the Left is my maglite AA. You can see that the area of spill is a little brighter and the delineation between the central spot and the spill is more gradual.

The tailcap switch feels good. Hope it lasts.

Well, so far so good. A good quality light. Thanks again to dealextreme.

update: I'd also like to point out that since this is a keychain light, size is a factor in choosing this. And its now Aug 25, 2010. Still works like a charm. No problems
