Renewed smart money card and Paypal

My smart money card will expire at the end of the month, but I put in for a replacement. Actually, All I did was fall in line at the local Smart office and apply for a new one, only to discover that you can't do that unless the card is already expired. Since the expiration date is 11/11, it will still be valid until 12/11 or December 1, 2011

But later on I did receive a text message from Smart money saying that I will receive a replacement. I have no idea if this is automatic or it was triggered by my trying to have it replaced. If it is automatic, then kudos to smart for making things easy for the customer.

Today, its only November 9 but a 2Go letter arrived with my replacement card. Since this is a renewal of an expired card, I get the same card number. The only thing that changed is the expiration date and the CSC. The card came with a sticker that says call 15177 on your smart cellphone to activate. OK, I called and got it activated. Actually it was already active since its just a renewal. They then texted me the instructions.

To nominate your primary card: Just type ENROLL CARD   and send to 343.

OK I did that. Next I went to paypal to link my card. This procedure is much faster than with a new card.

• unlock card for internet transactions
• login to paypal
• you will be at the my account tab
• click update my credit card info
• click edit
• change the expiry date to the new one and change the CSC

After that you will recieve a text: Approval of Php 43.54 purchase at PAYPAL Merchant from card . Avail Bal: Php XXXX Ref: XXXXXX


And thats it.

Paypal limits and smart money

In my last smart money and paypal post, I had a dissenting opinion in the comments. 2 points are claimed.
1. There is a limit if you do not verify your card and
2. The verify your card option is still there, the one that charges your card 100 pesos

I find it puzzling because as I said in my last post I recently removed my smart money card and added it again but I found that the procedure was different. I found that there is no verify option anymore, its only one step for both adding and verifying a card.

And if I log into my paypal account I can see my limits. Again, I have never verified my card. The only charges I accrued are the php 43.xx pesos during the add card phase and whatever I bought since then. I was never billed for php 100 pesos.

 To see your limits log in and go to the my account tab > oveview then click on the view limits link. As for me I seem to be unlimited. It says

Your sending limit has been removed.

Completed

Withdrawal

Now that you've completed verification, you can choose one of two ways to transfer your money from your PayPal account to your bank account or your Visa® credit/debit card.

• Bank account: Your withdrawal limit has been removed

• Visa® credit/debit card: Your daily withdrawal limit is $500.00 USD.Note: The daily withdrawal limit to a Visa® credit/debit card cannot be removed.

So you can see that I do not have any limits. So why the discrepancy? One possibility is that since I wrote that blog post, paypal has reverted to the old method. Once my card expires end of this year, I'll try again

verifying smart money on paypal - new for may 2011

As of may 2011, the procedure has changed a bit. Read the notes at the end of the post

I'm doing a step by step guide on how to link your smart money card to paypal and how to verify a smart money card on paypal. I assume you already have a paypal account and you have no credit cards linked to paypal yet.

• If you use a prepaid smart cellphone, make sure your smart cellphone has enough load for several messages. PhP 10-20 should be enough
• Make sure your smart money account has at least 100 pesos
• Log into pay pal
• Go to the My Account tab
• Under my account, you should see: Overview, Add Funds, Withdraw, History, Resolution Center and Profile. Go to Profile
• Select add/edit credit card
• Note: I do not know if the name listed should be the same as the one on the credit card
• Select mastercard
• Type the card number. Do not type in any spaces or dashes, just the 16 digit number
• type in the expiration date
• type in the card verification number, the last 3 digits on the back of the card
• check the billing address
• Get your cellphone and go to the simcard menu. Select smart money then internet txns then unlock then choose the name of the smart money card then press OK to answer the question " unlock for internet?"
• enter the w-PIN on the cellphone
• You will get 2 text messages. They both come from Smart money and the first one says " 1/2   is now unlocked for online purchase. For your security, kindly lock ur account after ur purchase. Transaction. ref: ". The second one says " 2/2 Unlocking your account signifies that u agree to the SmartMoney Terms & Conditions for internet purchase. For details please go to www.smart.com.ph/money "
• Once you get both text messages, go back to your web browser and press the Add Card button
• You will get a text message saying " approval of Php 43.xx purchase at PAYPAL Merchant from card . Avail Bal: PhP . Ref:  ". The php 43.xx may change depending on the exchange rate.
• Paypal should display "You have successfully added a credit card. Please note that this credit card is now your primary card. For more information on your primary card, please refer to your Profile."
• The 43.xx peso charge AFAIK will no be refunded

That should be it.

As of may 2011, paypal and/or smart changed something. It used to be there was no 43.xx charge. Adding a card was a free act. After adding a card you would need to verify your credit card in a separate step. Now, the 2 steps of adding and verifying a card are condensed into one step. How do I know? I tested it!!  Before the changes, around march 2011, I replaced my card due to physical damage. Since its a new card with a new number I had to ADD it to paypal and VERIFY it, using the old procedure (see below) and I was able to . However for testing purposes I removed the card and tried to add and verify it again. I was surprised when my card was charged 4x.xx pesos and there was no verify link visible. Thats what led me to write this blog entry.

Also of note, you previously needed to enter a 4 digit code which you would get via text. That step is not present anymore.

There are rumors that the amount you can buy with paypal is limited if you do not verify. However since I have been able to buy stuff online (albeit low value stuff) and I cannot find any link or way to verify my card, I'm assuming that this rumor is not true or was true until the change.





For records purposes, I am repeating the old procedure which of course you cannot do anymore:

After adding your card, you would verify it. This involves  a refundable 100 peso charge. You should see an option to verify the card. After the 100 pesos is charged, paypal will ask you to enter a 4 digit code. For a credit card, it should be in your credit card bill. For smart money, you can find the code in the bill you receive via text message. It should arrive in a few minutes.

To properly document the procedure for adding then verifying a smart money card with paypal, I removed my smart money card from paypal and tried to add it again. Unfortunately I'm getting an error. I'm recieving a text message right after trying to add the card.

This credit card has been denied by the bank that issued your credit card. For details on why your card was denied, please contact your credit card issuer's customer service department. Or, you may want to try adding a different credit card.

You should not have any Php 43.88 charge to your smart money card. You should have a 100 peso charge but only upon verifiying the card. And I haven't reached verification stage yet. That comes after adding the card.

I have tried two times several days apart. Since I was able to add and verify  my smart card last month, I have to assume there is a problem in the system, probably with Smart.

smart money card replaced

My old smart money card is pretty beat up. Physical damage from sweat and flexing inside my wallet. Since its now not working with supermarket cash registers, I decided to replace the card.

Replacement took a week from my local smart office. The number is different from the old one so I had to re-link it with paypal. The linking and verification process worked. So the rumors that smart money is now not compatible with paypal is not true.

Verify my Paypal Account using Smart Money

(1) Go to www.paypal.com
(2) Log-in to your Paypal account
(3) Point your mouse to Profile Menu
(4) Choose Add/Edit Credit Card
(5) Click Add a Card

(6) Before clicking Add Card please Unlock your SMART MONEY Card first.

*** UNLOCK your SMART MONEY Card (using your mobile phone) ***
a. Send INTERNET to 343 through text message (to enable Internet Purchases)
b. Go to SMART Menu
c. Choose SMART Money
d. Choose Internet Txn
e. then choose Unlock
f. then choose the name of the card you want to unlock
g. then enter your W-PIN, a message will appear confirming your request
h. Press YES ($1.00 charge to your Smart Money)

Note: You will receive a text message that your card is now ready/unlocked
for online purchases. Make sure that your Smart Money Card
is loaded with at least Php 200.00 for the Paypal Verfication Charge.
Also make sure that you have atleast Php 30.00 airtime Cellphone Load
for the Php 2.50 charge per send.

(7) After UNLOCKING your Card.. Immediately click on the Add Card button at Paypal
because SMART MONEY card Locks Automatically
(8) A Message will appear that Paypal Cannot Verify your Card
(9) To Enable Paypal to verify your Card:
Just repeat the UNLOCK procedure using your mobile phone
(procedure b to h only, another $1.00 charge to your Smart Money)
(10) Then a Paypal Code will be sent to you via Text Message.
Message includes the 4 digit Paypal Code (EXPUSE)
(11) Then Enter the Paypal Code to your Paypal Account

Once approved.. You now have a Verified Paypal Account..
Paypal will add $1.95 to your Paypal account
from your Smart Money Card..
as a refund for the Verification process..
This will take about 24 to 48 hours..

oh my! i can't believe it.... my paypal account is now verified by linking to my smart money mastercard. i was having a hard time at first, but then just follow the instructions given here... and voila! my paypal account is now verified! the catch here, i think, is you have to unlock your smart card for internet transaction each and everytime to have to pay for the charges..., so your smart card must have a balance of at least 200php.... and always view your paypal account after each transaction for further instructions til you get verified... smart will text you the 4digit code you have to enter in order to complete the trnasaction and get verified...

How to pay Smart Bro using Smart Money

To pay bills using Smart Money:

1. Go to Smart Menu, select Smart Money
2. Select Pay Bills, press OK
3. Select Others, press OK
4. Enter Biller Code, press OK
5. Enter Bill Account Number (please refer to your billing statement), press OK
6. You will receive a prompt message, press OK
7. Select source of funds, press OK
8. Enter amount you would like to pay, press OK
9. You will receive a prompt message confirming the transaction, press OK
10. Enter W-PIN, press OK
11. Subscriber will receive an SMS confirmation of his transaction

Ohkay, the final post of this series.

Threads in TipidPC and in the ebay discussion boards plus a few hits in google searches say that, tes you can verify your paypal account with smart money. WTF!! I want to buy stuff online, not verify my paypal account. Besides, it has already been verified using my mom's credit card. Please stop beating around the bush and say YES or NO. At least Smart answered my email with a YES and one of the employees in my local Smart office has used her smart money card online.

So AFAIK I am the first person on the net to actually claim to be able to buy stuff online using smart money + paypal. 

The old version of smart money is not paypal compatible. The new version has a number that starts with 52996***********. And you have to unlock internet transactions right before
Well, when I started it wasnt a sure thing with all the beating around the bushes.Fortunately It worked.

UPDATE: yeah the link is broken. But its pretty simple to do. All you have to do is to apply for smart money. Once you get it, load it with some pesos. Then enable internet transactions by sending INTERNET to 343 through text message. Link it to your paypal account (treat it like a mastercard credit card) and you can now verify it. Dont forget to use your cellphone to unlock the card for internet transactions just before verifying or buying. And take note, there are two "unlocks" for smart money. One is for internet transactions, one is for swiping the card at your local store so dont get them mixed up. The internet transactions lock is always on by default. It will lock after each internet transaction and a few minutes after unlocking if its idle. Verification will take ~ 2 days.

Applying for smart money is simple. No need for any proof of income like credit cards. Just 30 pesos and an ID. I also had to upgrade my decade old sim card (retaining my old number), another 100 pesos. 130 pesos one time fee vs 1200 pesos a year for a credit card. FTW!!!!! I got my card ~ 5 days after applying.
