firefox 3.6 tab bug/annoyance

I often browse with many many tabs open in firefox. I am use to the fact that the tab works this way.  When you right click on a link and choose "open in new tab", the new tab opens to the right of the rightmost tab.

So if we have TAB1, TAB2 and TAB3, and I open a fourth tab, the result used to be

TAB1, TAB2, TAB3, TAB4.

However starting with firefox 3.6 (confirmed with 2 pc's, one with a fresh install of firefox 3.6), the new tab goes to the right of the tab where the link is located, as seen here

then if we open a new tab from tab 1, this is the result

TAB1, TAB4, TAB2, TAB3


I find this annoying because I got used to the old system.

Solution

New tabs do not appear to the right of the last

In Firefox 3.6, new tabs created from opening links are positioned next to the current tab. This behavior makes it easier than before to keep similar tabs close together.
If you would like to use the old behavior from Firefox 3.5 and earlier, in which new tabs open at the end of the tab strip, you can set configure this through the advanced configuration.

1. In the Location bar, type about:config and press EnterReturn.
   • The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear. Click I'll be careful, I promise!, to continue to the about:config page.
2. Search for the preference browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent.
3. Double-click on browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent, which should set the value to false.

If you ever want to change it back, repeat the steps above, which will toggle the value back to true.

Autopager firefox plug in

I'm writing about a firefox plug in that I think is very nice. Its called autopager.

Heres how it works. You come upon a web page that has page 1, page 2, etc etc like say a google search result. Autopager automatically tries to load the next page so as you read the page contents and scroll down you find that viola, the next page is already loaded waiting for your eyeballs. This is so convenient!

Not all web pages are supported. You can use the controls to make a profile of the webpage so that it is supported but it looks complex. I took the lazy way out and just waited for other people so submit the profiles to the autopager database.

Bringing your bookmarks with you

Xmarks is a nifty firefox addon. It can sync favorites and passwords from one PC to another. If you're on an unfamiliar PC, you can just load My Xmarks, sign in and you get a list of your bookmarks
