Steve Jobs should have seen a doctor earlier

Steve Jobs should have seen a doctor earlier.

smaller version

In mid-2004, Jobs announced to his employees that he had been diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his pancreas.[111] The prognosis for pancreatic cancer is usually very poor; Jobs, however, stated that he had a rare, far less aggressive type known as islet cell neuroendocrine tumor.[111] After initially resisting the idea of conventional medical intervention and embarking on a special diet to thwart the disease, Jobs underwent a pancreaticoduodenectomy (or "Whipple procedure") in July 2004

This is a quick and dirty educational poster I made. The positioning of the text and the wording and translation was rushed but I think it gets the message across: Do not delay by trying out non proven treatments first, see your doctor early before the disease gets worse. The department of Health should use something like this in an educational campaign.

How Apple Had a Spectacular Year

Apple broke four consecutive quarterly revenue and profit records and amid the worst recession in decades, hired thousands while others cut jobs, but what most distinguishes Apple is that while other tech titans spent 2010 cutting costs and acquiring new technology through mergers, this $65 billion company has been relentless in innovating like a startup and ruthless in promoting technologies that disrupt its own product lines. '"It's been an awesome year. The frequency of new stuff just boggles the mind," says Charles Wolf, an analyst with Needham & Co. "There is no company that is remotely close to what Apple is doing. They are the Energizer Bunny." In September 2005, Apple killed off the popular iPod Mini to make way for the the iPod Nano; Apple openly acknowledges that the iPhone is cannibalizing its iPods — and they don't seem to care; and the iPad tablet could ultimately threaten its core laptop business. "[Apple] has a different cultural mind-set," concludes Wolf. "They are acting like a startup, though they are becoming a $100 billion company."'

Note on the bolded text. Apple does not follow the old business model of making a product and protecting the heck out of it even if it is obsolete. For RTS gamers, thats a "turtling" strategy. Apple knows that everything becomes obsolete sooner or later usually by a new product that is released by their competitors. So they plan ahead by innovating and making new products on their own, similar to a blitzkreig strategy. That way, competitors are forced to always play catch up.

I'm not a fan of apple but I have to give credit where credit is due.

new 27 inch IMac requires proprietary SSD

Okay, everybody knows that apple  is obsessive compulsive and hates people who modify their products. Here's an example. The 27 inch imac has two drive bays. Buy a SSD from apple and you can install it in the second drive bay. Well, whats to stop you from saving money by buying a SSD from somewhere cheaper and installing it yourself? You'll be needing a mounting bracket and a couple of cables that are only supplied with Apple's own SSD.

I predict that knock off adapters and cables will soon be available.

Leaked: apple's response to the iphone 4 antenna bug

If you  call Apple to complain about the iphone 4 antenna bug, this is how Apple tells its call center agents to respond.

1. Keep all of the positioning statements in the BN handy – your tone when delivering this information is important.
a. The iPhone 4’s wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. Our testing shows that iPhone 4’s overall antenna performance is better than iPhone 3GS.
b. Gripping almost any mobile phone in certain places will reduce its reception. This is true of the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, and many other phones we have tested. It is a fact of life in the wireless world.
c. If you are experiencing this on your iPhone 3GS, avoid covering the bottom-right side with your hand.
d. If you are experiencing this on your iPhone 4, avoid covering the black strip in the lower-left corner of the metal band.
e. The use of a case or Bumper that is made out of rubber or plastic may improve wireless performance by keeping your hand from directly covering these areas.
2. Do not perform warranty service. Use the positioning above for any customer questions or concerns.
3. Don’t forget YOU STILL NEED to probe and troubleshoot. If a customer calls about their reception while the phone is sitting on a table (not being held) it is not the metal band.
4. ONLY escalate if the issue exists when the phone is not held AND you cannot resolve it.
5. We ARE NOT appeasing customers with free bumpers – DON’T promise a free bumper to customers.

Your cash is not good enough for apple

The Apple store does not accept cash for ipads or iphones

Apple's iPad purchase policy states the company only takes two forms of plastic that Campbell doesn't have: credit or debit cards. In other words, dollars won't work, neither will gift cards:

"iPad purchases are limited to 2 per customer and must be purchased with a Credit Card or Debit Card only."

Apple's iPhone payment policies are similar:

"iPhone purchases are limited to five iPhones per customer and must be purchased with a Credit Card, Debit Card or Gift Card."

Adobe ads condemn apple

Adobe ads take a dig at apple. I agree with them. Apple is too possessive for my tastes.

We believe that consumers should be able to freely access their favorite content and applications, regardless of what computer they have, what browser they like, or what device suits their needs. No company - no matter how big or how creative - should dictate what you can create, how you create it, or what you can experience on the web.

When markets are open, anyone with a great idea has a chance to drive innovation and find new customers. Adobe's business philosophy is based on a premise that, in an open market, the best products will win in the end - and the best way to compete is to create the best technology and innovate faster than your competitors.

We believe that Apple, by taking the opposite approach, has taken a step that could undermine this next chapter of the web - the chapter in which mobile devices outnumber computers, any individual can be a publisher, and content is accessed anywhere and at any time.

In the end, we believe the question is really this: Who controls the World Wide Web? And we believe the answer is: nobody - and everybody, but certainly not a single company.

using a mouse with the ipad

Too bad you need to jailbreak the ipad to do it

in reference to:
"Using the BTstack application that brought Bluetooth mouse support to iPhone, enterprising individuals discovered the same technique works on a jailbroken iPad as well, and hooked up Apple's own Magic Mouse to show it off to the world. Mind you, while this implementation does look quite useful, we do detect the barest hint of lag"

Apple raises ebook prices for everyone

I've never liked apple because of its unfair business practices and this is one example. Apple whether you like it or not is a major player here so you have a large incentive to toe their line.

This will only encourage piracy as it drives up book costs.

Oh, apple ebooks have DRM by the way.

in reference to:
"Apple requires that if you sell books through them that you absolutely cannot sell them for less through anyone else. To my understanding Amazon also requires this, so Apple and Amazon prices should be identical in the future, but Amazon doesn't force prices to end in .99. What this means is that an e-book that the author was quite happy to sell for $2.29 or $2.49 is now going to cost $2.99 from everybody."
